2 HOUR NORM AWARENESS

The NORM Awareness course is designed for the awareness level only. This course is designed for the person that wants to know the hazards of NORM. This course will cover subjects such as where NORM comes from, how to identify possible NORM areas, and how to protect yourself from NORM.

Course Length: 2hrs | CFR Reference: 29 CFR 1910.97; 29 CFR 1910.1096; Chapter 14 Title 33

For persons working in areas with possible NORM contamination and OSHA (persons working in the area of possible NORM contamination)

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) Awareness course, the trainee will be familiar with:

  • Where NORM comes from
  • What NORM is
  • Exposure controls and PPE related to NORM
  • Basic radiation safety
  • Biological concerns

Written Exam

Exam and hands-on competency will be evaluated at the end of each course. Incorrectly answered questions will be reviewed with student to ensure understanding before completion of course.

Retraining

If employee changes job or performance indicated need for retraining.

4-HOUR NORM/TENORM AWARENESS TRAINING NORM/TENORM

Awareness training is typically provided to oil and gas operator employees and other workers who need to understand the risks of working around NORM/TENORM, but will not perform surveys or decontamination activities. This basic level of NORM/TENORM training is designed to inform the employee where they can recognize the hazard.Students, who successfully pass the exam, will receive a certificate of completion. This course includes, but is not limited to, the following subjects:

  • Introduction to NORM/TENORM and Atomic Theory
  • Radiation and Contamination
  • Biological Effects of Radiation & Sources
  • Basic Survey Instrumentation
  • Radiation Protection Programs
  • Respiratory Protection & Personnel Monitoring
  • Federal & State Regulations
  • Risks Associated with Radiation Exposure
  • Emergency Actions & Disposal Options

NORM/TENORM Awareness training should be renewed every twelve (12) months to show applicable knowledge and continued understanding of radiation safety principles
